Take a look at the world around you. What do you see? Buildings. Lots and lots of buildings, from houses to skyscrapers and from residential to commercial. It took a lot of manpower and time to construct all those buildings, but none of it would be possible without someone handling plans and designs for them. That someone is called an architect. So what does an architect do?

Why is an Architect Important for Construction Projects?

Simply put, architects are licensed professionals whose task is to draw a detailed plan for a building or a complex of buildings, including construction drawings, or designs for landscape, plumbing and communication systems.

Although you might imagine an architect standing over a design plan spread out on the table, with a ruler and a pen, today architects are using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) and building information modeling (BIM) much more. Which is not to say that hand-drawing skills have become obsolete. They are still very useful in the early stages of the construction projects.

Although you’ll mostly find architects working in an office, where they can better coordinate with their team, engineers and the project manager, and also meet with the potential clients, architects work in the field as well. This is because they need to stay in the loop and ensure that the project is going on schedule and that their design and construction plans are correctly implemented.

As you can probably surprise from this, architects work long hours, but are essential to any construction project, no matter how small. Who knows how we would do without them.
